“Rumor of Tatang S.” Group Exhibition

img_9485This exhibition was initiated by Mulyakarya Collective comprising students and alumni of ISI Yogyakarta. This group calls itself tukang gambar yang bercerita (drawsmiths tell stories), and chose comics as their creative medium. This group manages irregular and spontaneous publications in the form of photocopied comics accommodating various comic styles. Apparently this is still prevalent among young people, even after the indie comic boom has passed. In this exhibition they worked on a tribute to an Indonesian comic legend, Tatang S. An observation method was carried out by collecting articles about Tatang S, interviewing his family and collectors of his works.

Tatang S, alias Tatang Suhenra, as a comic artist who was famous for his Gareng-Petruk comic series (that boomed in 1980’s). Tatang S managed to pass through generations, beginning from silat martial art comics of 1960s-70s, the Punakawan series (Gareng-Petruk) of the 80s, to the religious comic era (heaven-hell) of 1990s.
