Data exhibition and Discussion “HAI! Retro”

cover_tahun-ke-viii_1984HAI magazine had once been the main lifestyle reference for Indonesian youth, especially for those who were teenagers in 1980s and 90s. To them, HAI was a reference for music, clothing, as well as a source of knowledge on what was happening in the world; the language was right, smart without being patronizing. IVAA and KUNCI Cultural Studies were drawn to present HAI magazine bundles that can still be accessed at KUNCI library. As part of IVAA Retro Series , pages from Science & Technology sections, Literature and Illustrations were reproduced to be exhibited at IVAA Hobby Studio and library. The side event was chat sessions at IVAA regarding how art students in 1980s responded to HAI as media that was one of the most desired targets for sending works of illustration; chat sessions at KUNCI regarding how HAI presented music knowledge that became the benchmark for Indonesian youth of the 80s. The exhibition itself was part of IVAA’s campaign to use old archives related to youth visual culture, by using iconography or significant markers of a certain generation in Indonesia.
