Lyra Abueg Garcellano

lyra-11This program is a test after three previous residency periods. Lyra Abueg Garcellano, a selected Phillipine artist, was asked to package her obligation to exhibit in the form of a journal, to conduct artist talk and a general lecture, as well as a visiting program and an open studio. At the time, she created a project entitled “The Red Dot Project” and “Free Land”. In Red Dot, she distributed a circular red paper cutout to be worn by the artists. Lyra responded to the issue that collectors are more interested in how famous an artist’s name is rather than the quality of the work produced. In Free Land, she distributed a package that resembled a take-away rice wraps, but filled with dirt. The wraps are then buried together by the recipients. This performance symbolizes how Lyra, a foreigner who also sees a lot of problems with land ownership in her country, distributed land no belonging to her to people who live on that land every day.
