IVAA determined the focus of this program series, which developed out of the IVAA documentation and archives daily work, to periodically focus on various themes related to problems that occur in contemporary culture in society.
1. Women and Gender in Expressions of Contemporary Culture.
Mapping, data reclassification and reading of archives as well as collecting statistics on activities and art practices relating to gender and women’s issues in Indonesian art. To re-examine/analyze the role of women and explore the theme of women in art and present an alternative perspective on developments in the role of women within Indonesian contemporary culture.
2. Mapping the Creative Industry in and around Yogyakarta
Attempting to identify the general elements in creative industry practices in Indonesia as well as their connection to fundamentalist movements in the Indonesian industry. A collection of case studies using a range of variables with a geographic focus on Yogyakarta and its surroundings. Situation and infrastructure background is examined and then we try to assess the potential of the creative industry and its relations and community developments in the geographic region concerned.
3. Inter-cultural Issues in an Urban Marginal Community Perspective
Re-reading indicators of inter-cultural issues that involve pluralism and religious fundamentalism through the visual art archives. Attempting to challenge the general perspective and media representation of fundamentalism. It is hoped to map: Marginal perspectives on intellectual issues and religious fundamentalism, which are mostly not represented in the media or in public debates. Attempting to find the grey area between the extreme left and the extreme right, which are present in processing visual art concepts and expressions and alternative media.
4. Visual Art Practices and Environmental Issues
Mapping environmental awareness/action movement variables regarding the environment through visual art. Re-reading the effectiveness of visual art actions in changing the community’s perspective towards the environment. The meaning of environment in this context covers community awareness of the shifting city space, environmental damage, climate change and its relation to changing community behavior/order. The specific aim of this program is to be participative in the global environmental awareness campaign.
