Date: 9-16 May 2008
Artist: Nanang Zulkarnaen
Location: IVAA Hobby Studio
This exhibition is a sample of the paradox between the statement of the death of the subject and the tendency that artists’ works are increasingly becoming personal statements. Nanag Zulkarnaen’s works are personal statements, particularly about the mustache sitting above his lips. These mustaches are then processes into semiotics, turning them into metaphors. Nanang Zulkarnaen’s mustache is a physical element as well as an object of creativity. The patch of hair above his lips do not only signify gender, but also forms the image of that gender. He presented these works in miniature, following the exhibition space that is also made mini. For the initiative, he limited the number of visitors to his exhibition at the IVAA Hobby Studio, to create a gawking atmosphere at the mini gallery named “Galeri ASVIGUS”.
